I've had one for a many years - and yes, it is easy to burn yourself with it! I haven't used it much either, since I don't do a lot of small work or applique.
I was told a couple of years ago by one of my local quilt shops that they didn't allow them in their classes any more because they get too hot & guess they had too many accidents with 'em. :(
