So you really are using 5 colors but you don't need the measurement to include the 5th color--the center?
Quilt Pro tells me that for a 9" block, setting it 6 blocks across and 8 blocks down gives you a good size throw/lap quilt--54" x 72". You need 1/2 yard for the center block & 7/8 yard for each of the 4 colors around the center block.
You do realize that the Bright Hopes block uses partial seams in its construction? Partial seams are easy enough to do as long as you mark you stop points and back stitch to lock them in. Kind of like Y seams but easier since you don't have to match an angle.
