Just a suggestion or two that I find very helpful:
I get a plastic or vinyl tablecloth backed with flannel which I either tack to the wall or place on the floor when I am laying out blocks for a quilt. It keeps everything organized and in place, can be rolled up or folded for storage or travel and makes it so easy to try different layouts.
I also take photos of the final layout for that "Just in Case!" situation. Saved my B*** a time or two!
