I've also made these and used the snack bags and they hold up nicely! I have also taken the concept and made my own quilted covers with pockets and needle holders to turn out some really pretty extensive travel sewing kits...I love them and am using one right now as I'm travelling...you can also use ziplock sandwich size baggies and cut off the excess after you've stitched them down...it's cheaper, too.
I also like to use them as small first aid kits for your cars!
