Last year I decorated sweatshirts with pieced designs. (I found brand new sweatshirts at a thrift shop from an event, and made designs to cover the printed logos on the front and a small patch on one upper sleeve.)
Does your mom only wear cardigan style? Use a vertical set of three 6" blocks down each size of the zipper.
