The 301 is not in the case because I'm sewing with it and I have to purchase a new case for the 221. I'm still holding on to the original cases. But the smell gets to my asthma. I placed crumpled newspapers in the case with used dryer sheets, closed it up for a week or so and that helped; you could also try sprinkling baking soda in the case and sit it out in the sun for a few days.
If the machine itself smells old and yucky, replace the oil absorbing pad that goes underneath the screwed on base cover. Both of those things helped my machine and case and I didn't have problems with my asthma after that. Good Luck!
