That's also how I do it, no less than 1/2 yard. For me, fat quarters are a tease. You pull them out of your stash and they will be perfect for your project. But there just isn't enough of it to do much with. So you are disappointed you didn't purchase more when you had the chance. Avoid the disappointment and buy more to start with.

Fat quarters are really good for appliquers who use little pieces of this and that. Piecers, who rotary cut, usually prefer to have the full 40" width.
