Funny you mention this shade idea...recently saw someone offer this for sale & they rolled it up with pieces intact. Of course you would need to mount it a little further off the wall as the roll will get larger with more fabric "in" the roll.

We have these kinds of wood valances over many of our windows, so I guess I could put one up in any of the bedrooms. I will bet they are mounting them to the sides of the wood valance rather then on the wall directly, as this would give the greater depth needed.
