I believe SID can be tackled.
yes, a plexiglass 1/4 inch is easily and cheaply made by a glass company, have some circles also made, great for feathered wreaths. This is something I so wanted to learn and had these made for around $11, hmmm 6 yrs ago. The nice size for a hand held on is around 6"X 2.5".
Slow and steady wins the race. I use non stitch regulated, on a low speed, and you will learn to nicely move the ruler.
You need a larger base on your machine.
