Supervising little ones, it is good teaching - sorting by colors, by sizes, counting - remember the counting to a 100. All kinds of math - basic add/subtract. Besides art projects. I saw a really cut "bunny" created with browns shades of buttons and one with the white/beige buttons. Iwould love to create one of these for Easter.

Kids love to play with buttons... If you don't like them, gather them all up and donate to a girl scout troop, Summer Fun program, or Vacation Bible School. I guarantee they will be able to use them for arts and crafts projects.
... and for future 'gifts' of unwanted buttons, there's always the garbage can.
