I've done it and have had mixed results. I usually prewash unless I'm taking a class and the instructor specifically asks that the fabric no be washed. But, I'm more comfortable washing it before cutting. Then I get a good sense about bleeding (those darn reds) and how the fabric looks after it's been washed.
