What are your thoughts on being CREATIVE?
No offence intended but that is very weird thinking on your DH's part - being creative is doing exactly what you are doing to create something unique with your own twist on it, using your own imagination.

Being creative is of course originally creating something completely from scratch with your own imagination - sewing, cooking, art, etc. Following instructions letter by letter is good (a good many of us do this) but you are then following someone else's creativity. But of course when quilting, we can be very creative and original even when following a pattern, by our own fabric choices.

You are showing your own creativity by adding your own twist on things.
