Was talking to my friend and she said she does that to all her shoes, even the cheap ones, and none of them have come apart, she even did it with suede shoes - she showed them to me and they looked ok - I thought they would be water marked or something, and she said so far none of her shoes have fallen apart as I asked her about the glue question.
I am diabetic as well, and no issues from doing this with my shoes.
