The layering part is pretty much the same, the cutting depends on the kind of blocks. For OBW, you use triangles to make either hexagons or octogans but stack n whack can be squares, triangles, ribbon strips, fans etc. The real difference is in the layout. OBW = no sashing and you are aiming for an all over design that flows around the surface of the quilt. With the right fabric and a skilled designer, this process deconstructs and reforms the fabric onto a whole new level. In stack n whack the blocks are sashed and each stand alone in their individual beaty - like this lady's lovely blocks posted here. :-D
