Good advice. I did try that already... Good news is that a mechanically inclined friend just figured it out for me. Yippee!!! It turns out that the lever that raises and lowers the pressure foot has two different positions for lowering it. Down is for thicker fabric and forward towards the operator is for thinner fabric. The instruction book doesn't mention the "forward" setting at all. Between the two "down" settings and the pressure screw at the top, the machine should accommodate a variety of fabric thicknesses. I'll post pictures later in case anyone else has a similar problem.
