I have another friend retiring at the end of May after 39 years of teaching in junior high and high school. Her son is in the navy and she likes red, white, and blue. When choosing those colors for her quilt, I really didn't want it to be something she would only use for the 4th of July so I picked muted tones from Connecting Threads "Patriotic" collection. Hopefully she will enjoy cuddling with it while she watches her favorite team, the Oregon Ducks, play football this fall. The pattern is called Garden Steps.
