We all have our own motivations. For me, having a deadline is the most helpful. Since most of my quilts are gifts, the deadline is easy. When working under the deadline, having a small goal each day, even if it is sewing 10 minutes, helps to get the job done while working with all the other goals and deadlines of my life. The ones I have trouble with are the ones I have planned for myself.
