Having struggled with getting a precise FG I tried every technique mentioned above I finally found what works for me. For the geese part I cut a square 1-1/4" larger than the FINISHED width and cut it twice diagonally into 4 triangles. For the sky I cut 4 squares 1" larger than the FINISHED height and cut them once diagonally into 8 smaller triangles. Sew the 2 of the smaller triangles on either side of a larger one and press. Now I have a FG that is a wee bit larger than I need, and usually wonky. Lastly I square this unit up using one of Eleanor Burns' FG rulers, or the Square in a Square ruler, much like I make HST a wee larger and square them up. This makes 4 FG units and the waste is very minimal but the result (for me at least) is a unit that is pert near perfect. =)
