First 2 squares are put onto the larger square on opposite corners and you draw a line down the center and sew 1/4" on each side of the line. Then you cut apart and press. Next, onto each of the 2 units you add a square, again draw a diagonal line and sew on each side of it, and then cut apart and press. You end up with 4 units with no waste. As long as you cut accurately and sew accurately, this is a wonderful method.
I just learned this method in a beginning quilt class. Makes quick work if you have a lot to make (I had 40). The only thing you need to watch is when you square up the finished geese, be sure the "Point" (or beak!) of the goose is pointing at you...not away from you. This makes for a much straighter set or border.
