Make a quilt you love. Then you're happy no matter what the judges say or don't say.

Yes, there are a lot of complex quilt designs out there, but there are also some simple ones. One of the winners at Paducah this year was a very simple Amish-inspired bar quilt, with wonderful machine quilting. You can't get any more basic or lovely than that!
