I vote for English paper piecing or applique - There are lots of tutorials around for both - EPP fits in a small tote or plastic box - really easy to just pick up and go - If you are a little more ambitious and cathredral window is a great project- Check Eddie's tutorial - he did it all on the machine but it can be done by hand as well.
