But here's another take on it--if you really hate it, if you don't want to spend any more time on it, then you can allow yourself to abandon it. We learn by our mistakes, but that doesn't mean we have to suffer the results endlessly once something hasn't worked out for us. I once started making a pair of pajamas for my husband, and no matter how hard I tried to get them to fit they wouldn't, and looked hideous. Finally, one Saturday afternoon when I'd worked on them for another hour or two, I gave myself permission to take my sharpest scissors and cut them into a million pieces. When my husband and daughter came home, I said "Look, here's your PJs" and tossed the zillion pieces of fabric over my head. We all laughed ourselves silly, and I felt better knowing I wouldn't spend another minute on this fruitless endeavor.

On the other hand, looks like lots of encouraging suggestions here for helping you with this project. Could you post a picture of how it works out?
