I just thought of something else young kids were wearing in the 40's leather spats, they were brown,covering the shoes and the leg till the knee , they were buttoned on the outer side. We usually wore them on Sunday to go to church or for family outings, from fall to Easter. Owning a pair meant that you came from a well-to-do family, (Mine were propably bought at the thrift store!)
I also remember hat women would pretend theta wear nylons by coloring their legs with a mixture of iodine and water
and draw a black line with an eye pencil for the seam.
