Direct drive means gear driven, it has no external belt. See the belt on the Singer 99 in the advertisement. Since you want ellectric only I would look for a direct drive.
I have a Singer 201 that is belted and the motor did not work so I put that one in my threadle. I am looking for a Singer 201 direct drive, no belt, to do the actual quilting on. If it is a direct drive you can not put it in a treadle and I think it can not be converted to hand cranck.

You might want to hold out for a newer model that is a direct drive and has a reverse. If you do not need to move it you might also consider the full size 15-91 or 201.
