When I was making the strap for a bag that my son helped make I used as stack of tape to the right for my 1/4 inch guide and then put another stack of tape on the left - the width of the strap - so that my seam wouldn't be all over the place. Obviously that won't work for much of the piece work, but definitely helped for that small project.
