Fabric collections - they usually make it easy, having light, medium, and dark within the same collection.
Other than that, I just use the colours I like, even though they may be unusual combinations. I once had a bouquet of dahlias - orange, purple, and bright pink - it was striking and I have loved that combination ever since. Mother Nature always has a good eye for colours!
