It sounds like you can pin a basted quilt sandwich to one side to the long rail, then roll the quilt on it and pin the end to the second long rail. I use regular quilter straight pins.

Then you can roll to the center, adjust the tension, and start quilting. The fabric on the shorter ends can be used to adjust the side tension - I do that on my frame sometimes.
