I didn't either til I bought these flat pins. I pin on the pieced side and then turn it over to sew on the back because the back has less to catch on the needle. I suppose it is a habit that I should change but it is easier to pin on the pieced side and make sure it is laying the way I want it to. I sometimes sew on the pieced side but the seams have a way of catching on the needle that irritates me. It is smoother sewing the other side.
