Another possibility .... if you had a piece of fabric you wanted to focus on (ie a picture, a flower), you could use it as the centre (eg. 6" square) and then build your logs around it.
IMHO smaller logs, are always nicer and help show off your work more.
As mentioned, the fabric you are using might help determine what your better size to use is.
And yes, as you said, anything goes ... there are no rules!
What is right for you is the right way to do it!
