I'm right now working on a black and white quilt that has solid black borders. I too was worried about the black fading or turning purple or reddish. I ordered the amish black out of the Keepsake Quilt catalog and it looks really good. It has a true, deep black color and is a little heavier than regular quilt cotton. It sewed real well too.
