I saw a beautiful T-shirt quilt at our guild meeting. The lady had made a quilt top of large blocks that blended together in color--THEN she cut the designs from the t-shirts, worked out a pleasing arrangement and then appliqued them onto the top -- It was so pretty. I'm sure she backed her t-shirts with iron on interfacing before she cut out the designs. It gave her so much more freedom in using the designs than when you just make square blocks. I'm going to do one like hers with my grandson's high school tshirts. I'm sorry I don't have a picture for you.
