When I worked on a project with a group of 5th graders, I ironed a square of freezer paper to the back of their block. We could still see through for tracing, and it held the muslin firm. Make a practice piece first to see if the ink will spread out (not sure if that's the correct word). You probably want a sharp line. I heard somewhere (probably some quilting show on TV) that you can do that for autograph quilts.
