I think you almost have to have at least one. I started out with two small ones; one about 2ft by50in and the second one 2ft by 4ftl. they were both made by me with thin wood, muslin and batting. When I moved my daughter out she left her queen size box springs behind in her room (now my sewing room). After a lot of debate what to do with it I turned it on it's end up against the wall and now I have a big design wall. I use the smallest of other two for putting on my cutting table and ironing the large pieces of material and the other one I keep as a small design wall when doing smaller blocks. They are both thin, light weight and easy to tuck in behind bookcases, etc. Enjoy
