Thanks Irishrose! You are always so helpful and go out of your way to be there for us. I tried to find something in this thread but no luck.
Carmon from April 1930's said that it is a lead tube that encloses the wires to protect them from the gears. He recommended a wire brush to remove it. This is not something that needs to be all the time. It was because of not being done for a long time. I hope this info can help someone else :thumbup:
