I wonder how your time zone got to be 1/2 hour off from all of the other time zones?
The Newfoundland Standard Time zone exists because of the location of the island in the North Atlantic and the fact that Newfoundland was a separate country when the time zones were established way back when. We are 3.5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. So we are 1 1/2 hours ahead of Eastern Standard time. Everything is a half hour later here. So, for example, CBC TV will advertize a show at 8 p.m., 8:30 in Newfoundland.
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know y'all had been a separate country from Canada. Love learning new things.
Newfoundland became Canada's 10th province in 1949. I was born a British subject in 1948 -- all Newfoundlanders became naturalized Canadian citizens on March 31, 1949.
