Rox, I found that when I trace the template on the piece I'm using for the applique AND on the block that I can get it in place better. I stick a pin through a point on the applique piece, then poke the pin through the exact same point on the block..I use at least 2 pins to start with to hold the piece. This helped me tremendously, maybe it will work for you.
