It can be pass through a horse sneezing, whinnying, or thru brushes or tack. It survives on tack, and anything that has been in contact with an infected horse should be destroyed. A person petting an infected horse, and then petting a healthy horse can spread the virus to the healthy horse.

It's wickedly nasty stuff, and I know of several rodeos that have been canceled because of it.
