I got mine about the same time - maybe I have your twin! It has never (knock on wood) given me any problems.
I got one of those machines years ago also but they sold it under the name of Taylor. I never had a problem with it either. I also have a bunch of singers from vintage ones to new ones and never had any--not any problem with them either! Never have had tension problems--nothing! Guess I've been lucky! When I got my last Singer (L-500) my cousin commented: "You sure like those singers don't you?" Told her, "Yup, I get the same/close features for a lot less money cause everybody bad mouths Singers! Yeah for me!"
