Will reply here so others can read too. Washed with strong soap and water. Then used a wire brush to remove any loose paint/rust, washed and dried before I sprayed legs with 1 can of inexpensive black paint -because it's for inside usage. I had the chopping block piece of wood
(24" x 27") that was lightly sanded with 0000 steel wool,
well cleaned off, even used cloth with bleach to finish cleaning/sterilizing. Rubbed in light coating of olive oil just before I took the photo so I didn't want to set anything on the top until dry.

I have a large chopping block over 175 yrs old so have special oil that doesn't go rancid for food use.
Skilled in refinishing so this was a small job to do. Today will keep at the Singer cabinet that I want done by Tues.
