I have a low-end Walmart Brother that I have been happily stitching on for 10 years with no shop visits. Very good machine, as long as I put a Mouse pad underneath, as they do shimmy if I don't.[/quote]

Yep!! That's what we have been using. I now have a Singer 301, which also cost me about $125 total with parts, etc., that I use for piecing. Those Brother machines are really quite reliable. My DH sewed all kinds of stuff on his, and eventually had to have it repaired at the shop. But mine have never been to the shop, and are little champs!!
