I've used the three layers of flannel, makes for a very warm quilt, but almost too warm for a baby, so for them I use just two layers of brushed homespun or flannel. Homespun frays the best, next best is flannel, then cotton. I've used them all. Love rag quilts. I've even used osnaburg (a course type of woven fabric that's cotton) for the center that frays well.
