As long as it's a lockstitch machine, it would probably be fine for quilting.

I removed the feed dogs on my industrial 31, replaced the needle plate with a darning plate and the foot with a Juki darning foot.

You can convert the machine to use a small household machine's motor if the giant motor is intimidating or too fast. I had planned to put a small motor on mine because I can't treadle and quilt at the same time. :) (like patting your head and rubbing your stomach - I'm not very coordinated! ;)
