i do the same thing with my washing machine..i buy vinegar by the gallon..
baking soda is also a whitener.
A few years ago..comsumer reports claimed that "walmart brand" diswsher detergent was the best.
be sure to run the dishwsher at night,before you go to bed, saves energy and doesn't heat the house up during the day.
