I replaced mine because it was about 12 - 15 years old. It was a June Tailor mat and I replaced with an Alvin mat. It was replaced b/c many, many fibers from the surface were showing and I had grooves from cutting on it - actual lines like you see at LQS', Joann's and the like. I didn't know better when I bought the mat that it would groove like that. MY Olfa(?), previous one, hadn't grooved like that but I hadn't had it as long either.
I don't know when they should be replaced but I needed to replace mine and DH bought the Alvin as a present for me. LOVE my Alvin. Have I mentioned how much I love my Alvin mat??!!
