The first machine that I ever got to use as a boy, was my Mother’s Singer 301A. It’s the short bed in the LBOW (light brown - oyster white?) color. I think the 301A is the only machine that Mom has ever owned. She bought it new, and it was in one of the trapezoid portable cases. I have the case, but it’s showing (and smelling) its age and miles. I put her 301A into a cabinet for her in 2006, and she’s still using it (she’s 82).

I bought myself a 301A in 2009 that looks just like Mom’s, and put it into one of the Singer Spinet Model 74 “Trapezoid” cabinets the same year. I haven’t ever used it yet, but I just had to have one in case Mom’s gets away. I’ll get it limbered up some day and get it back into service. We’re planning on Mom coming to live with us in the near future, so maybe she’ll let me sew on hers again... if I promise to be careful, of course.

I also have a Black Singer 301 (no “A”) long bed stashed up in the attic at the shop. I still need to round up a bobbin case, cords and control for it.
