Here are a few of my Baltimore Album blocks that are in progress (very slowly - as they have been back-burnered by "but firsts." All patterns are Elly Sienkiwecz's taken from the Best of Baltimore Beauties, and Baltimore Beauties, Vol II.
The woven basket will be filled with fruit and flowers and topped off with a bow.
The split leaf laurel wreath will have (I think 6) ruched roses - you might be able to see the little tiny dots of black - those are placement registration marks.
The cornicopia is found in many, many antique Baltimore Album Quilts. Said to represent the Odd Fellows with the colors of yellow (friendship), red (friendship) and blue (truth). The cornicopia will have an abundance of fruit spilling out of it. At the very top of the block you can see a turned over piece of white w/blue grid lines and black pattern. This is a gridded pellon that you trace your pattern onto and then baste to the top part of your block. This is your placement guide so that you don't have to do extensive (or any) marking on your block. As you go from applique piece to another, you just put your overlay back over the block to see where the next piece goes.
I do needle turn applique (YLI 100 silk) - and sometimes I do the freezer paper on top, sometimes on the bottom, and sometimes I don't use it at all. All depends on what I am working on and the size of the applique pieces.
Sorry the pictures are crooked.
