I use an older machine that doesn't let me put the feed dogs down too, and I cut a piece of template plastic and taped it over the feed dogs and went to work (it worked great)! Yes, if you make your own cover, you need a hole for the needle. Also, I set my stitch length to zero so the feed dogs don't try to "feed" against the cover.
