I have a few "choice words" for when things go wrong. It's lucky the cats and dogs can't quote me. I, too, have not had the best luck making log cabin blocks. I don't know what it is about them. However, since I last tried one (ages ago), I've seen paper piecing log cabin designs, and if I ever do one again, that will be the way to go. Another option, paper pieced or otherwise, would be to make wonky log cabin blocks. It might not be too late to go that way with the ones you've started, but generally it's best to make them really wonky so that nobody will think you were trying to make them even.
