Maybe their dicussion started because someone was tracing their genology and that's where it makes a difference who is blood related.

My ex sisters in laws used to refer to my children, as well as the children of my sisters, as my brother's neices and nephews, not theirs and that always sounded a little nasty. Anyway, DH and I consider the children of our siblings as neices and nephews to both of us. Also cousins of each of us are called cousins of both of us, although there are a few of DH's cousins I could do without, LOL!
