Straw needles are just too long for me. I use a number 12 applique needle. It is just as fine as a straw needle, but shorter. I get better control of the shorter needle.

The straw needles are preferred by some as the length gives them more control of the needle.

It is all in what works for you and your hands.

A very fine needle is a must to achieve the invisable blind stitch.
I also use an applique needle. :-D
